What is red tegu?

Red tegus, also known as Argentine red tegus, are large, muscular lizards native to South America. They are primarily found in the rainforests and grasslands of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil.

Adult red tegus can reach lengths of up to 4-5 feet and weigh between 10-20 pounds. They have a distinctive red coloration with black markings and yellow spots on their bodies, giving them a striking appearance.

Red tegus are omnivorous and have a varied diet that includes fruits, vegetables, insects, small mammals, and eggs. They are known to be opportunistic feeders and have powerful jaws for crushing and consuming their prey.

In captivity, red tegus require a large enclosure with plenty of space to roam and burrow. They also need a temperature gradient in their enclosure to regulate their body temperature, as well as UVB lighting to help them metabolize calcium.

Red tegus are popular pets among reptile enthusiasts due to their striking appearance and relatively docile nature. However, they require regular handling and socialization to remain tame and comfortable around humans.
